Hunter Biden Accepted Money to ‘Influence U.S. Government Agencies’

Special counsel David Weiss said in court documents on Wednesday that Hunter Biden received $3,101,258 from his Romanian partner, Gabriel Popoviciu, for the purpose of “influencing U.S. government agencies” while President Joe Biden was serving as vice president.

Weiss stopped short of accusing Hunter of “improperly coordinating with the Obama Administration,” but she did not prosecute him for violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) in 2023, choosing instead to prosecute the president’s son for alleged tax violations — a type of wrongdoing that Republicans may suspect. Claim Lacking justice.

Weiss You can still claim Hunter was charged with violating FARA after a special plea deal negotiated to receive blanket immunity collapsed. The special plea deal collapsed under judicial scrutiny, and Weiss subsequently filed gun and tax charges in Delaware and California, respectively. A tax trial is scheduled for September.

According to court documents, the Justice Department plans to present evidence at trial about Hunter’s Romanian business partners, as well as CEFC China Energy and Burisma Holdings, which paid millions of dollars to Hunter when his father was vice president and as a private citizen.

“This evidence does not include any evidence that defendants engaged in lobbying activities in exchange for these payments,” the filing states. To tell.

“Rather, the evidence will show that the defendants did very little work in exchange for the millions of dollars they received from these entities,” it added.

One of Hunter’s biggest deals was the Biden family receiving funds from CEFC China Energy Co., an organization with close ties to the Chinese Communist Party and Popoviciu. In 2023, the House Oversight Committee found that CEFC controlled State Energy HK Limited, a company linked to payments totaling $1.3 million to the Biden family.

Through the Biden family Suspicious Activity Report (SAR), the Committee also discovered that Biden associate Rob Walker had received a $3 million wire transfer from CEFC, resulting in four members of the Biden family – Hunter, James, Harry and an unidentified “Biden” – receiving a combined $1.3 million from the $3 million wire transfer.

Hunter, who is an attorney, also received $1 million in legal fees from CEFC Chairman Ye Jianming in 2017. In addition, Hunter received a large diamond from Ye in February 2017, valued at an estimated $80,000.

Hunter joined Burisma’s board of directors in April 2014, just two years before Joe Biden said he had forced the firing of prosecutor Viktor Shokin. investigating Burisma. Though Hunter had no experience in Ukraine or in the energy sector, Burisma paid him $83,000 a month, or $1 million a year, just weeks after his father was named “head” of Ukraine foreign policy.

In 2015, Burisma was accused of money laundering and official corruption. Shokin had been investigating the case before being fired under pressure from then-Vice President Joe Biden, who threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid to Ukraine if the Ukrainian government did not fire Prosecutor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma.

Judge Weiss indicted Hunter in December on nine tax-related charges, including three felony counts of failing to file taxes, tax evasion and filing false documents.

According to the indictment, Hunter “willfully failed to timely pay his 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 taxes even though he had the funds to pay some or all of those taxes” and instead “spent millions of dollars on a lavish lifestyle.”

Legal Professionals Criticized The court limited the scope of Weiss’ indictment for three reasons.

  • Weiss did not charge Hunter with being an unregistered foreign agent.
  • Limiting the prosecution to tax evasion would avoid abuse of power (implicating Joe Biden).
  • Weiss charged Hunter with tax evasion that allegedly occurred in recent years.

Hunter faces up to 17 years in prison if convicted. In total, he faces 42 years in federal prison for his nine tax evasion and three firearms-related convictions. Hunter’s sentencing on the firearms case is scheduled for November, after the presidential election.
