“The miracle is that all the vital organs were intact.”
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Wayborn said three deputies executed three arrest warrants on the 40-year-old suspect at a Dallas-Fort Worth area home on Wednesday. The suspect was wanted on charges of sexual assault of a child, indecent acts with a child and unlawful restraint of a person under 17.
As officers approached the home on Elinor Street, the man opened fire on officers, shooting one officer three times.
The man barricaded himself in his home and engaged in a standoff with police, including a SWAT team, who were called in.
He was later found dead from a gunshot wound.
“A Tarrant County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured at the hands of a violent, sick and twisted criminal who attempted to kill an officer today but thankfully was not successful,” Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Nokes said.
The deputy, later identified as Deputy Todd Tipton, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and returned home, and is said to be in good mental condition.
“We don’t know the calibre of the weapon,” Weyborn added, “but it struck him in the back of the neck, the arm and the back. The miracle is that all of the vital organs were spared.”
A neighbour of the deceased man said he had seen police at his house before.
