Texas Treasurer Arrested Again Amid Re-election Campaign
A Texas Democrat running for re-election this November has found herself in a bit of trouble once more. Early on Saturday, Texas City police responded to reports of a vehicle idling in the left lane of Highway 3.
At around 1:30 a.m., officers discovered Harris County Treasurer Carla Wyatt (D) asleep in the driver’s seat of her car, which had its engine running and hazard lights flashing. Details from court documents reveal that an officer had to open the door and turn off the ignition before waking her up.
When questioned about her location, Wyatt initially responded that she was “in heaven” and believed she was in Houston—despite that being over 60 miles away. Later, she mentioned being in town for a meeting scheduled in Galveston that morning. Her story varied as she first claimed to have consumed one glass of wine the previous night but then adjusted it to two glasses.
Officers noted the smell of alcohol and observed that Wyatt appeared unsteady on her feet. She expressed concerns about taking a sobriety test, citing a past leg injury.
Ultimately, Wyatt was charged with driving under the influence, categorized as a class B misdemeanor. She was released on bail set at $3,000 and has a court appearance scheduled for June 26.
Neither Wyatt nor her attorney provided any comments in response to media inquiries.
Additionally, a bail addendum indicates this arrest follows a string of prior DUI charges. In December 2023, Wyatt reportedly exhibited a concerning blood alcohol level of 0.365% to 0.367%, significantly exceeding the legal limit at that time.
Reports suggest she violated probation terms tied to that case on two separate occasions in early 2024, although those charges were dismissed later after she completed a pretrial diversion program.
In December 2025, Wyatt faced another arrest for suspected vehicle burglary, but a grand jury chose not to indict her related to that incident.
Wyatt, now 56 years old, was first elected as the Harris County Treasurer in 2022. As she campaigns for re-election this November, her candidacy is also listed on the Harris County Democratic Party’s website.
Requests for comments from the Harris County Democratic Party have gone unanswered.
