The Tarrant County Coroner’s Office identified the athlete as Lazar Dukic, 28, of Serbia. Meet officials said Dukic drowned during the run-swim event in Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth.
Cole Rahn, an athlete from Ontario, Canada, told WFAA-TV he was shocked by the incident.
“It’s just a complete shock. I don’t know what to think and I’m almost in denial of reality,” Rahn said.
“We saw him start to climb out, he made small turns and tried to get his head out of the water,” he recalled. “At that point we started yelling to the lifeguards that we needed help, but after a few seconds he was underwater and never resurfaced.”
Rahn said he saw the victim’s older brother running up and down the lakeside looking for his brother.
The horrific incident tainted the event, which was held in Fort Worth for the first time this year, after previously being held in Madison, Wisconsin for many years.

“Known for his kindness, humor and supportive nature, Lazar was a breath of fresh air wherever he went. Beyond his athletic achievements, Lazar was caring, humorous and always supportive of those around him,” the post read.
The CrossFit Games event was canceled for the day, but it’s unclear whether the rest of the scheduled events will continue through the weekend.
