After days of searching, a 20-year-old woman was found dead in the Grand Canyon.
in statementThe National Park Service (NPS) announced Tuesday that a body was found beneath Twin Overlook along Desert View Drive. The body was transported to the rim and transported to the Coconino County Coroner’s Office.
The individual has been identified as Leticia A. Castillo, 20, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Authorities say they believe Castillo entered the Grand Canyon on or about Aug. 3. The National Park Service and the coroner’s office are currently investigating.
The discovery of Castillo’s body marks the third fatality reported at the Grand Canyon since July 31, according to the National Park Service.
On July 31, park rangers Recovered The body of Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, of Hickory, North Carolina, fell from the edge about a quarter mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook.
Park officials said Mejia was near the edge of the rim when he accidentally fell, and they urge visitors to maintain a safe distance of at least six feet from the edge at all times and to stay behind railings and fences at observation decks.
The following day, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a visitor attempting a BASE jump from Yavapai Point, at the south end of the park. Park rangers responded and discovered the man’s body and deployed parachute approximately 500 feet below the rim. He said.
The victim was identified as 43-year-old Justin Guthrie of St. Ann, Missouri. According to I will report.
In a statement released after Guthrie’s death, the National Park Service warned that BASE jumping is a “high-risk activity” and is banned throughout the Grand Canyon.
