Former President Donald Trump’s campaign confirmed Saturday that an Iranian group hacked into the party’s internal communications in June. Politico Reported.
Politico and The Washington Post said they received emails in July from an anonymous account that shared a campaign research paper about Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), President Trump’s running mate and vice presidential nominee. The 271-page document contains public information about Vance, including his past criticism of Trump, which the document calls a “potential weakness.” In addition, the sender provided news media with portions of a research paper about Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), one of the front-runners to be President Trump’s running mate.
“The goal is to interfere and sow chaos in the 2024 elections.”
The hack coincides with a Microsoft report released on Friday, which claimed that “Iranian groups with ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sent spear-phishing emails to senior presidential campaign officials in June.”
Microsoft did not identify the presidential campaign that was targeted in the attack.
When Politico asked the anonymous sender how he obtained the documents, he replied, “I would prefer not to be interested in where I got them. Answering this question would put me at risk and would legally restrict my ability to release the documents.”
“These documents were illegally obtained from foreign sources hostile to the United States and were intended to interfere in the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout the Democratic electoral process,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang told Politico.
“Iran knows that President Trump will end their reign of terror just as he did during his first four years in the White House,” Chang added. “Media and outlets that reprint documents and internal communications are following the orders of America’s enemies and doing exactly what they want.”
Trump Written In response to the attack, the Iranian government posted on social media, “We have been informed by Microsoft that one of our many websites has been hacked by the Iranian government. This is never a good thing! They only had access to public information but still should not do this. Iran and other countries will stop at nothing because our government is weak and incompetent but it will not last for long. What Iran does not realize is that I intend to make the world a better and safer place and that will be good for them too!”
The F.B.I. NBC News The company said it was “aware of the media reports” but declined to comment further on the matter. Microsoft also declined to provide details about the reports.
A spokesman for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s mission to the United Nations told the news agency: “We do not believe any such reports. The Iranian government has no intention or motive to interfere in the US presidential elections.”
