Republican opponents of Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio have spoken out, arguing that the plan would “eviscerate” Americans’ Social Security benefits and potentially raise the retirement age.
“Sherrod Brown, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are going to gut Social Security, raise the retirement age and not fight for seniors,” Brown’s Republican opponent, Bernie Moreno, told The Washington Post.
“While Brown, Harris and Walz will curb these benefits, President Trump, J.D. Vance and I will ensure that Social Security remains tax-free and seniors receive the benefits they were promised.”
In 2010, Brown was involved in controversy. Simpson-Bowles Commissionproposed raising the retirement age to 69.
He also has multiple Tax increase For and against Social Security multiple He has worked to repeal the tax code during his 20 years in Congress.
Brown had advocated for a budget measure with a legislative rider that included new limits on Social Security as far back as the 1993-1994 Congress, but the limits never moved forward.
Between 2007 and 2009, Brown voted against three bills that would have reduced existing taxes on Social Security benefits.
That trend, combined with the sudden national attention given to candidates like Harris and Walz, has Ohio Republicans eager to warn the nation that their retirements may not be safe.
“Gov. Sherrod Brown has repeatedly voted for increasing Social Security taxes. He has also supported plans to raise the retirement age and cut retirement benefits for seniors. These are positions he needs to explain to Ohio’s seniors,” NRSC spokesman Philip Letsow told The Post.
The Harris-Waltz campaign Fox News Walz said he has “no plans” to raise the retirement age.
Brown’s office also declined to comment.
