… and so here we are. The Spanish giants are competing in their ninth Super Cup, the upwardly mobile Italians their first. Real Madrid go into tonight’s showdown in Warsaw as hot favourites, on account of being Real Madrid. Atalanta are good enough to spring a surprise, though, as evidenced by the proper number they did on the otherwise invincible Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final. So this could be fun. Or a thundering non-event, this being a pre-season affair after all. Kick-off is at 8pm BST, 9pm in Poland, and we’ll go straight to penalty kicks if the scores are level at the end. European football is back, baby! It’s on!

Main Events
33 minutes: This is very fragmented right now.
31 minutes: Although there were no dramatic developments, the audience was still as excited as ever.
29 minutes: Ruggeri finds some space on the left and sends in a low cross which Chouameni clears. The game isn’t exciting yet.
27 min: Ederson shoots from distance, it’s wide to the right but it’s close, if it’s just inches left towards the top corner Courtois might not have been able to get there.
25 minutes: De Roon received a quick throw-in from the right and made a run. He got into the penalty area and sent a cross. From a tight angle, the ball bounced off Militão and looped into the top left corner, while Courtois was completely wrong-footed. But the ball went over the bar. It would have been a farcical opening goal.
23 minutes: De Ketelaere slips past Rudiger on the right wing and fires the ball out, only to be unceremoniously checked. The penalty call is conservative, but De Ketelaere was looking to make contact so the argument is unconvincing. The game continues.
22 minutes: Now it’s Real’s turn to be patient. This game is not hot yet. There is still plenty of time for the 2024-25 season to become one for the history books.
20 minutes: Jimenezia tried to send De Ketelaere down the right channel, but the pass was overcooked. Goal kick. Unfortunately for Atalanta, De Ketelaere was in a lot of space inside the Real box.
19 minutes: Atalanta had just missed some great chances but kept things calm with some careful passing in midfield.
17 min: Carbaral curled in a low cross from the right and Vinicius Junior came close to tipping it in with his toe from six yards out, but he couldn’t stretch his foot far enough – his nails hadn’t been clipped – and the ball went in for the opener.
15 minutes: Valverde races into wide space on the right and rolls wide, Mbappe’s eyes lighting up 10 yards out. Mbappe stretches out and shoots, but Hien makes a brave block. It’s Mbappe’s first chance for Real. There will be more to come.
14 min: Mendy played a sharp pass to Rodrigo on the left, but the Real striker was forced to run away after being denied by Kolasinac.
12 minutes: Zappacosta went down while fighting with Mendy for a loose ball. There didn’t appear to be much contact, but the Atalanta player appeared to have suffered a blow to the head. A physiotherapist arrived and wrapped his head in a fancy mesh bandage. Thankfully, Zappacosta is otherwise fit to play on.
10 minutes: Atalanta goalkeeper Musso had the ball at his feet, but Vinicius Junior nearly made a save. He deflected it away just in time. Then Ederson and Valverde had a scuffle in midfield, and Ederson put his arm around Valverde’s waist from behind. Ederson was given the first yellow card of the game. To be honest, it was a bit harsh.
8 min: This gave Atalanta momentum, as they enjoyed solid possession in midfield and gained their first foothold in the match.
6 min: De Ketelaere played a smart pass into space on the right for Zappacosta, who reached the goal-line but couldn’t decide whether to cross or shoot, and ended up doing neither. Then the whistle blew for a harsh penalty after Lookman nudged Militão in the middle. But it was Italy’s first ray of hope.
5 minutes: Mbappe’s first meaningful touch came just left of Atalanta’s box, and although he was pushed past by De Roon and Hien, the sense of anticipation was palpable as the new signing won the ball.
4 minutes: Vinicius Junior is beaten down the left by Hien, who wins the ball from a free kick and earns the first corner of the game, which Rodrigo takes but is easily cleared. Real dominates in the early stages.
2 min: Soon, Real won possession and started to pass it around. Rodrigo dropped his shoulder to get past Kolasinac on the right, but his shot was deflected away. They had a chance to get the ball into the box and take a free-kick, but Real gave up and the game resumed with a tap-tap.
Atalanta is on the move. New signings Mateo Letegui and Ben Godfrey were on the bench.
The team is coming out of the tunnel! Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal is carrying the European Cup, while their opponents’ Marten de Roon holds the Europa League trophy. Both cups are raised on the pedestal and the teams line up for the pre-match photoshoot. Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid are in white, Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta in blue and black. We’re almost there! Anticipation is building, but instead of a crackling sound there is a gentle murmur. Is Charles Antaki excited? “I don’t think there will be any excitement. Real Madrid will win, so why not go straight to a penalty shootout. But to keep it going a little longer and give the stadium a little more value for its money, maybe we should go up to 35 or 100 innings, if we don’t want to bother going to Warsaw.”
If Real win tonight they will become the most successful club in the Super Cup’s history. When you line up their records – 15 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 5 Club World Cups and 3 Intercontinental Cups – you can see they’ve been pretty good in international football. There is a hole in their resume in the shape of the Cup Winners’ Cup, which is football’s equivalent of Don Bradman’s 99.94 and John Hewitt’s Eric Hollies in this particular article. Anyway, that Super Cup honour roll is…
5th place: AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid
4. Liverpool
3. Atletico Madrid
2: Anderlecht, Ajax, Juventus, Valencia, Bayern Munich, Chelsea
1: Dynamo Kyiv, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Aberdeen, Steaua Bucharest, Porto, Mechelen, Manchester United, Parma, Lazio, Galatasaray, Sevilla, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Manchester City
…And any excuse to post this cold-hearted masterpiece is good enough.
Real Madrid made three changes to the starting line-up that appeared in the Champions League final. Kylian Mbappé made his official debut for his new club, Aurélien Chouameni and Eder Militão returned to the starting line-up, Eduardo Camavinga dropped to the bench, Nacho moved to Al-Qadsia and Toni Kroos retired.
There are two changes to the Atalanta squad sent out looking to win the Europa League final. Captain Marten de Roon is back along with Mario Pasalic, Gianluca Scamacca has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, while Juventus-bound but potentially Liverpool final target Theun Koopmeiners has been left out of the squad after cancelling training.

preamble
It’s been 74 days since Real Madrid won their 15th European Cup…
…and 84 years since Atalanta won their first continental title…
…And so here we are. The Spanish giants are playing in their ninth Super Cup, while rising stars Italy are making their first appearance. Real Madrid, being Real Madrid, go into tonight’s showdown in Warsaw as heavy favourites. But Atalanta are good enough to spring a surprise, as they put up good enough numbers against invincible Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final. So this could be an interesting match. Or, since it’s a pre-season game after all, it could be no big event. Kick-off is at 8pm UK time, 9pm Polish timeand if the score is tied at the end, it will go straight to a penalty shootout. European football is back! Let it begin!
