Trader Joe’s issues urgent recall of over 650K candles due to ‘fire hazard’ and ‘safety risk’

Trader Joe’s is urgently recalling approximately 653,000 Mango Tangerine-scented candles nationwide due to a “safety risk” caused by “unpredictable burn patterns.” The company announced Thursday.

According to the notice According to guidelines issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a candle flame can spread from the wick into the wax, causing a larger-than-anticipated flame and “posing a fire hazard.”

The recalled 5.7-ounce candles were sold in June 2024 and contain white wax with a cotton wick in a tin container with SKU number 56879 on the base.

Anyone who purchased this particular candle is urged not to use it and to either discard the product or return it to Trader Joe’s for a full refund of $4.

While the official recall date announced by the CPSC is Thursday, August 15, Trader Joe’s website states the product was originally recalled in June, but doesn’t say how many units had been sold or whether any incidents had been reported.

Meanwhile, the CPSC reported 14 high-flame incidents, including three cases of minor property damage and two cases of minor burns.
