A hugely popular computer game has sparked confusion and anger after suddenly adding pronouns and removing gender options at the same time.
game Old School Runescape It was released in 2013 and aimed to preserve the 2007 version of the game. It is hailed as a classic among game fans and costs around $80 I play it every year.
The number of concurrent players is expected to reach 205,000 in November 2023, and fans are pleased to see the developers soliciting feedback through polls and modifying the game accordingly.
Until recently, the developers decided to remove the option to choose male or female when creating a character in the game, Replaced We will compare “Body Type A” and “Body Type B”.
“Body Type A and Body Type B? Have you been living a life of seclusion from the world for the last 10 years?”
In addition, the developer Pronoun choiceIt gives you the options of “he/him,” “they/them,” and “she/her.”
“We didn’t vote for this!”, a user told a moderator of X’s game. “I play RuneScape to escape this nonsense, not to be forced to watch it! Players will suffer… I’m thinking about cancelling my membership.”
A moderator who goes by the name “Mod Ash,” who has over 140,000 followers on X, responded to the user, saying he didn’t expect players to see the text so frequently.
“Thank you to players for letting us know that you no longer wish to play due to the text option. We wish you the best of luck in your future gameplay,” he added with a smile.
“You vote on this, but not on pronouns?”
Just hours before the moderator’s response, a fan Predicted The RuneScape team will likely ignore concerns about this change.
“Body Type A and Body Type B? Have you been naive for the last 10 years? Gamers don’t want this rubbish,” wrote one outraged user, adding: “I’m sick of this. I’ve been a gamer for 18 years and I’m sick of this.”
“‘Bye, no one is forcing you to play the fascist bigot,’ you might say. But think about it, I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks that. I wish you the best of luck in this ‘new inclusive’ direction you’re moving in.”
More fans took issue with the fact that the insertion of pronouns and the removal of gender were not the subject of a survey the developers had conducted with customers, a move made even more puzzling by the game’s creators, with other surveys being conducted on minuscule details.
“You don’t vote for pronouns, but you vote for this?” one fan asked. askedI have attached an image of a survey asking, “Should the green pixel be removed from the construction skill icon?”
Over 50,000 gamers responded to this particular pool, proving just how responsive the fanbase is.
Another user, who has had an account for over 8,200 days (22 years), said he won’t be renewing his membership because of the recent controversy.
“I was thinking about renewing my membership and playing OSRS again after taking a year off. I don’t think I’ll be doing that anytime soon.”
The production company, Jagex, has a history of activism that has drawn backlash in the past.
in 2017The Pride Update was widely mocked for its use of rainbows, and has since become an infamous moment in gaming history.
At the time, the developer told the user vote Users were asked if they wanted a “gay pride event.” 66% of respondents said “no,” overwhelmingly rejecting the idea. More than 20,000 people took part in the poll.
On the Jagex website, each yearGender Pay Gap ReportIt touts the “importance of a diverse workforce” and complains about the lack of “female representation across the industry.”
But in its latest report, the company was only able to reduce its own pay gap by just 0.1%.
“The 2022-2023 report met our expectation of a reduction in the gender pay gap, with the gender pay gap decreasing from 25.9% to 25.8%,” the website states.
