Democrats worry that the overconfidence that has gripped the party during Vice President Kamala Harris’ honeymoon period will hurt her chances of withstanding fierce attacks as the November election approaches.
Democratic strategists understand that Harris, a far-left, radical West Coast Democrat, will ultimately have to answer questions about her record and weather any opposition investigations that could be deployed to sabotage her campaign and pose an October surprise.
“Every presidential election in modern history has experienced unexpected scandals, crises, and world events, but at some point the laws of politics have changed. Kamala Harris Campaign,” former Fernand Amandi Obama’s strategist, said of hill.
“Anyone taking measurements for the White House curtains needs to take a serious reality check,” he added.
Most battleground state polls have shown Harris statistically tied with former President Donald Trump, a poll that has excited Democrats because Trump had a nearly double-digit lead over President Joe Biden in the same survey before he left office.
“Democrats are understandably ecstatic about what’s happening with the Harris-Waltz campaign,” said Democratic strategist Tim Hogan, “but anyone who’s paid attention to politics over the past decade, especially a Democrat, knows that things can change, and that events beyond our control can quickly alter the nature of elections.”
“So we go into this campaign with understandable anxiety that even polling around the world can’t fully assuage,” said Democratic strategist Christy Setzer. “Everything seems fine, but believe me when I say we’re not taking anything for granted.”
Other Democrats warned that the polling data did not necessarily bode well for Harris’ campaign. Jim Messina, citing data on undecided voters, He said there was no room for overconfidence in this “incredibly close” election.
“When you look at the undecided electorate in this election, it’s down to about 5 percent,” he told Fox News’ Dana Perino. “The question is, are some of those voters actually going to vote?”
Harris also faces another problem as the new Democratic candidate: Recent polls suggest that 70% of registered Democrats and independents who voted for Biden in 2020 know little to nothing about many of her extreme and controversial positions. Showed.
Enten noted that enthusiasm among Democrats to vote for Harris fell one percentage point (61%) compared to enthusiasm to vote for Biden in May (62%), while enthusiasm among Republicans to vote for Trump increased two points from May (58%) to August (60%).
Trump’s favorability rating in the RealClearPolitics average is less than a percentage point lower than its peak recorded in April, Breitbart reported last week, while his approval rating in the FiveThirtyEight average is also less than a percentage point lower than its peak recorded in February.
