Most Americans reject push by Biden, Dems to change Supreme Court: poll

A new national poll featured in a Wall Street Journal op-ed finds that most Americans do not support sweeping reform of the Supreme Court, despite President Joe Biden’s last-minute push for it.

The Journal cited a survey by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy that found that “as many of the speakers at this week’s Democratic National Convention support the separation of powers as they seek to weaken it.”

After abruptly dropping out of the presidential race a month ago, President Biden has backed legislation that would significantly change the composition of the Supreme Court, including imposing term limits on justices. His plan is also facing questions about its constitutionality.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a Mason-Dixon poll asked voters whether they “support or oppose amending the U.S. Constitution to change the structure of the U.S. Supreme Court,” finding that 52% were opposed and 41% supported the idea of ​​amending the Constitution to change the structure of the Supreme Court.

The poll noted that “for more than 150 years, the United States Supreme Court has had nine justices” and that “court expansion is generally defined as increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court primarily to shift the ideological balance of the court,” and asked respondents whether they supported “expanding the court.”

Only 34% supported such a plan, 59% opposed it, and 7% of voters were undecided.

The poll also found that an overwhelming majority of voters support the statement that “plans to expand the membership of the United States Supreme Court are primarily politically motivated.”

Furthermore, 87% of voters (84% of Democrats) agree that “an independent judiciary is an important tool in protecting our civil rights.”

Democrats in Congress have worked with the White House to push for fundamental reforms to the Supreme Court.

And at the Democratic National Convention this week, Democrats are already attacking the Supreme Court.
