House Democrats are concerned about violence at next week’s Democratic National Convention.
Capitol security officials have advised House Democrats not to make hotel reservations in their own names and have been told not to engage with protesters.
House Democrats attending next week’s Democratic National Convention have been advised by Capitol Hill security officials not to book hotel rooms in their own names or engage with protesters if they encounter them, according to information obtained by Axios.
Why it matters: The guidelines come as some Democratic lawmakers, shaken by a series of disruptive pro-Palestinian protests since Israel and Hamas began their war last year, worry about their own safety.
One House Democrat told Axios they were “very concerned” about their safety, and that “of course” other members were too.
A House Democratic leader said law enforcement was telling members “not to go to certain areas because violence is expected.”
“Protesters are not staying at the designated protest locations… and there are people out there who are actually trying to cause trouble,” the councilman predicted.
Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling said he doesn’t expect a repeat of the violence that occurred at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
Chicago’s police chief says police are prepared for the possibility of thousands of protesters descending on the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago this week.
“This is not 1968. Our officers are trained differently,” Capt. Larry Snelling of Chicago-area station WMAQ-TV said, referring to the demonstrations and riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention against the Vietnam War.
“The police department has evolved. The officers have evolved. We’ve been training for over a year for this case, so it’s about preparation,” he said.About 50,000 people are expected to attend the convention in Chicago, according to officials, including thousands of anti-Israel war activists who plan to demonstrate near the United Center, where Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept the party’s nomination.
