Chasten Buttigieg: 'I hope to inspire my kids' as much as Tim Walz does

Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said Thursday he wants to inspire his children the way Tim Walz inspired his own, following the Minnesota governor’s moving speech on the eve of accepting the Democratic vice presidential nomination.

“I want to inspire kids to tears like Gus Waltz when they see me speak of my dreams and passion for my country,” Chasten Buttigieg wrote. Social Media Platform XHe referred to the governor’s 17-year-old son.

“@Tim_Walz dedicated his life to service and clearly went above and beyond expectations in being an excellent, supportive and loving father in every way. We should all be so lucky to know that kind of love,” he continued.

Standing with his mother, Gwen, and sister, Hope, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, Gus Waltz was in tears as he cheered on his father. He stood and pumped his fist as he spoke about the family’s struggles with fertility treatments.

“Gus, Hope, Gwen, you guys mean my world. I love you guys,” Waltz said, making his 17-year-old son jump.

“That’s my dad!” said Gus Waltz.

Gus’s response garnered attention on social media Wednesday night, with a video of him supporting his father going viral across multiple platforms.

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki posted on X. “Team Gas Waltz” Meanwhile, former White House communications director Kate Bedingfield said, “Tim Waltz pitched 100 percent perfectly, it was a grand slam, a touchdown in every way, but somehow Gus Waltz was even better.”

In his own address at the party’s convention on Wednesday, Sen. Pete Buttigieg pushed back against Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance’s earlier comments about “childfree people” and that childfree people “have no physical responsibility for the future of this country.”

“I didn’t have children when I deployed to Afghanistan, and many of the men and women who went with me across the border didn’t have children,” Buttigieg said, “but let me say that our commitment to the future of this country was pretty physical.”

He and Chasten announced in September 2021 that We welcomed twins into our family.
