CBP One app lacks vetting capabilities for illegal aliens applying for asylum, internal report finds

Recent Report An investigation by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General found that Customs and Border Protection’s CBP One application lacked some features that could help it screen illegal immigrants applying for asylum.

The app was developed to streamline the asylum application process so that border patrol agents can spend less time processing illegal immigrants at the border. Between January 12, 2023 and August 18, 2023, the app was used to process more than 260,000 foreigners.

“We do not use the information to identify suspicious trends.”

The internal report alleged that the Biden-Harris administration’s CBP had failed to assess the “risk” of applications and made three recommendations aimed at improving the screening process. CBP agreed with all three recommendations.

The inspector general concluded that the agency had initially failed to consider key factors such as the app’s design, language translation capabilities and fairness in reservation allocation, resulting in users experiencing frequent application crashes, error messages and language barriers.

“Further, CBP may be missing an opportunity to use advance information from CBP One™ to improve the pre-entry screening process. CBP uses personal and biometric information submitted to CBP One™ to determine whether entering aliens have adverse records, but does not use that information to identify suspicious trends as part of the pre-entry screening process,” the report states.

The inspector general said they identified cases in which unrelated illegal immigrants repeatedly used the same addresses in the United States as their intended future residence after entering the country. The inspector general noted that CBP currently does not have the capacity to automatically analyze data submitted at all ports of entry to look for suspicious trends. Illegal immigrants who apply through the app can make appointments at any of the eight ports of entry to continue their asylum cases.

The report also noted that the application had several security vulnerabilities that could leave users’ information vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Earlier this month, the Biden-Harris Administration announced it was loosening requirements for applicants to use the CBP One app. Currently, foreign nationals who want to make an appointment through the app must be in central or northern Mexico. But the latest expansion will allow them to apply for an appointment from some areas in southern Mexico.

The House Homeland Security Committee previously Found It claims that the app is a “shocking abuse” and that “95.8% of inadmissible aliens who made reservations through the app” were allowed into the United States.
