During CNN’s coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, CNN senior political commentator and former Obama adviser David Axelrod said it was “really interesting” that 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris barely mentioned President Joe Biden in her pre-convention speech that night, calling the speech in some ways “her declaration of independence.”
Axelrod said:[T]Finally, Scott, to your point about Biden and the Republican strategy, I understand that it’s a reasonable strategy. [is] “They tried to pressure her on the negative aspects of Biden, and it’s really interesting that she barely mentioned Joe Biden in this speech. In some ways, this was her declaration of independence. And she came into her own with this speech. And as I said before, we’ll see how it goes. I think it’s going to be hard to pressure her in the way that you’d expect.”
