CNN host Jake Tapper said on “The Lead” Thursday that former President Donald Trump calling Vice President Kamala Harris lazy was a “racist trope against African-Americans.”
“Former President Trump is slamming Vice President Harris at the border today. Listen to it,” Tapper said.
In Arizona, Trump said, “We had a border commissioner who loved the title, but she didn’t want to do the job because she was lazy. And maybe more important than being lazy, she wants to have an open border.”
Tapper said, “Lazy, that’s new. I’ve never heard him use that word before. It’s an interesting word.”
“I know that immigration at the border has been an issue and that there have been some changes, but how would you advise Vice President Harris to address this issue?” he asked.
“We’ll see how she phrases it, but what she’s made very clear is that she supports a bipartisan bill that would be the toughest border security bill in decades,” said Susan Rice, a former White House adviser.
“I have to say he’s really tried to attack her in a variety of ways. I’ve known Vice President Harris for a long time and I think some of the criticisms of her are fair and some are not. I’ve never heard him say she’s lazy, which, of course, is a racist trope against African-Americans. What are your thoughts about him using that word?”
“We have neither the time nor the need to get bogged down in Donald Trump,” Reeve said.
