of The Wall Street Journal (The Wall Street Journal) The editorial committee Loose In an op-ed Monday, he criticized Vice President Kamala Harris' role in President Joe Biden's Afghanistan withdrawal.
Monday marked the third anniversary of the terrorist bombing in Afghanistan that killed 13 Americans as the U.S. withdrew from the country during President Biden's failed nuclear rollout. Kamala Harris honored the victims in a statement and said she had no regrets about what happened leading up to the bombing.
“President Biden made the courageous and right decision to end the longest war in American history,” she said.
of The Wall Street Journal The editorial board noted that Biden's withdrawal amounted to an inexcusable failure.
It's good to know what she thinks, but it doesn't bode well for her judgment as a future commander in chief. The decision to withdraw was perhaps the worst of Biden's presidency, because he ignored the advice of nearly all his advisors that a full withdrawal on a certain date would cause the Afghan government to collapse and allow the Taliban to take power. Keeping several thousand troops on to support the Afghan military could have prevented this disaster and its consequences.
The article was written by Marine General Kenneth McKenzie, who was then commander of the Central Command. School of War Podcast.
“What do you think the general outcome will be from the collapse and our absence?” the moderator asked.
Well, I think on a couple of levels. [Vladimir] “President Putin's invasion of Ukraine was a direct result of this. I think China has been emboldened as a result of that. On a more operational level, I think ISIS-K is now gaining ground in Afghanistan. The attack in Moscow just a few months ago was just a harbinger of things to come,” McKenzie said.
“Our ability to actually look into Afghanistan and understand what's going on there is very small compared to what it was before, essentially zero. So we expected these things to happen, and they are happening. Our ability to exert influence here is, again, very limited,” McKenzie added.
of The Wall Street Journal The editorial board concluded the op-ed by noting that Biden and Harris had been warned about the outcome.
“While the needless deaths of 13 Americans is a terrible outcome, the withdrawal marked the end of Biden's ability to deter adversaries around the world,” the report said. “Harris's acceptance of this failure now suggests more is to come if she wins in November.”
