Marine wounded in Abbey Gate bombing explains why Trump’s visit to Arlington Cemetery matters

U.S. Marine Sergeant Tyler Vargas Andrews, who was critically wounded in a suicide bomb attack while retreating from Afghanistan, was among the veterans who visited Arlington National Cemetery with former President Donald Trump on Monday to mark the third anniversary of the attack.

The ISIS-K bomber killed 13 U.S. troops, wounded dozens, and killed more than 100 Afghans. Soldiers at Abbey Gate, including Vargas Andrews, say the attack could have been prevented, but that the rules of engagement were not clear and that superiors did not give the order to engage the bomber.

Vargas Andrews Post to Instagram Why was it important for Trump to attend an event commemorating the 13 victims? Vargas-Andrews was seriously injured, losing her right arm and left leg.

“No matter how you feel [Trump] “But that doesn't matter. He's the one who took the time to show up at Arlington National Cemetery today to take part in the memorial service for the 13 Americans killed that day in Kabul, Afghanistan. He's the only one who took the time to speak with the families and friends there, including me,” he said.

Vargas-Andrews posted the post after media reports showed others harshly criticizing President Trump for visiting Arlington National Cemetery.

“I'm grateful to be alive,” Vargas Andrews further explained, “and a part of my heart will forever be broken by what happened in that short time in Kabul, Afghanistan. My heart is broken for an entire generation as well.” [Global War On Terror] Veterans and their families and friends were affected by the evacuation and the 20 years that preceded it, but I do not regret what I went through, and I never will.”

Vargas-Andrews posted the post shortly after media reports about others who had made harsh, expletive-filled criticisms of President Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery.

“Yet on this day, January 6th, 2021, a traitor who tried to overthrow the government, a convicted felon, a convicted rapist, a degenerate convicted of fraud, a misogynist pig, a liar and con man who recommended the Bible and now recommends a shitty book, was allowed to go to Arlington National Cemetery on this special day and lay a wreath. Who on earth allowed this motherfucker to do that and shit on the fallen soldiers who are buried there?” Navy veteran Brad Berkwitt said in a video that went viral on X and was published on January 24, 2013. Reported Featured in Newsweek.

“To all you f**king MAGAt f**king veterans who are okay with this treasonous traitor, like I said, your f**king military service means nothing because you f**ked the oath I took and the f**king oath you took,” he continued, in what Newsweek magazine described as a “fiery criticism.”
