Pro-Palestinian Students Take Over U. Michigan Student Gov‘t, Suspend Funds to Groups Until Divestment

As classes resume for the fall semester, pro-Palestinian students have taken control of the University of Michigan's student government and are threatening to suspend funding to student organizations until the university agrees to divest from and boycott Israel.

of The New York Times Reported Tuesday:

At the University of Michigan, many student activities are typically funded or subsidized by the Central Student Government, known as the CSG, an elected council of undergraduate and graduate students that decides how to distribute about $1.3 million annually to about 400 organizations.

But last spring, pro-Palestinian activists from the Shutdown Party took control of the student government. They immediately moved to withhold funding from all activities and promised that the university would divest from companies profiting from Israel's war on Gaza.

Of the roughly 20 groups that supported the “shutdown,” some are at risk of losing their funding, including the Syrian Student Organization, the Islamic Students Association and the Students' Union Against Sweatshops.

The student government's stance adds to an already tense atmosphere on campus, where four pro-Palestinian activists were arrested Wednesday during a protest in the campus' central square, known as the Diag.

of Detroit Free Press Report:

University of Michigan officials said police arrested four pro-Palestinian protesters on Wednesday after a group tried to disrupt a campus event.

During the period Festifol Anti-Israel protesters showed up at the Diag on Wednesday afternoon and began demonstrating. Colleen Mastny, vice chancellor for public affairs, told the Free Press that the protesters, about 50 in number, were asked to disperse. None of the four people arrested were students, Mastny said.

The university has refused to divest as students have vowed to continue their protests.
