On Wednesday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) issued a subpoena to a political consulting firm headed by Judge Juan Marchand's daughter, Lauren.
According to letter In the letter, sent to Michael Nellis, founder and CEO of Authentic Campaigns, the company said:[ed] It neglected its obligation to “voluntarily comply with the Committee's scrutiny,” including by failing to provide requested documents.
“This is an unprecedented abuse of power.”
Jordan launched an investigation into Lauren Marchand earlier this month, alleging that her role at a progressive political consulting firm created a potential “conflict of interest” for her father, who is handling Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump's New York criminal case in which Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records.
“If Authentic Campaigns provides services to President Trump's political opponents and stands to financially benefit from President Trump's criminal trial, it creates the appearance of a conflict of interest by Judge Marchan, who several experts say should have resigned. After all, the judge donated to President Biden, imposed an unconstitutional gag order on President Trump, prevented expert witnesses for the defense from giving detailed testimony, and told jurors they didn't have to reach a unanimous verdict,” Jordan told Blaze News.
Authentic Campaigns raised at least $93 million for two Democratic clients, including through solicitation emails that mentioned Trump's trial in New York. Judge Marchan rejected multiple attempts by Trump's lawyers to remove him from the case.
In an August letter to Lauren Marchan, Jordan wrote, “Experts have expressed serious concerns about your father, Judge Marchan's refusal to recuse himself from President Trump's case, despite your work on behalf of President Trump's political opponents and the financial benefit that your company, Authentic Campaigns, would receive from a prosecution and conviction.”
“At the very least, there is recognition that you and Authentic Campaigns stand to gain significantly from prosecuting President Trump in a forum overseen by your father,” Jordan said.
The Ohio congressman ordered Lauren Marchand to turn over by Aug. 8 “all contracts and invoices” and “all documents and communications” related to the campaigns of President Joe Biden (D), Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris, and the Democratic National Committee starting in 2023. She was also to turn over to the committee all political activity that references President Trump's New York lawsuit, as well as all communications between her employer and her father or his staff regarding the lawsuit.
So Subpoena Notice The House Judiciary Committee charged Nellis with “implicating” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D).[ing] This is an unprecedented abuse of power to indict a former president and current presidential candidate of the United States.”
“Relevant to the committee's oversight is the impartiality of the presiding judge, Juan Merchan, who has refused to recuse himself from the case given his apparent conflicts of interest and bias.”
Jordan said Nellis has worked for Harris' campaign and is expected to continue to do so in the future. Nellis has denied allegations that his company currently has contracts with the Harris campaign or the Democratic National Committee.
Nellis responded by posting the summons. Social Media“This is another abuse of power aimed at spreading a baseless, right-wing conspiracy theory linking Authentic to Donald Trump's fraud trial,” he said.
“Let me be clear: these allegations against our company are completely false and purely politically motivated,” Nellis continued. “This is a blatant attempt to intimidate us and distract attention from the conviction of Donald Trump. We reject the intimidation and will not allow House Republicans and MAGA extremists to spread lies about our work. We remain steadfast in our mission and are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our friends and family during this time.”
