Majority Favors Deportations as More Democrats Oppose Migration

A YouGov poll conducted in August found that 56% of registered voters support a policy that would “arrest and deport thousands of illegal immigrants.”

Only 35% of voters be against According to a poll conducted among 1,555 adult citizens and voters from August 25 to 27, the repatriation policy still enjoys strong support.

If we count only those who “strongly” agree, the ratio is nearly 2-to-1, or 37 percent to 21 percent.

YouGov's results are in line with those of other polls showing majorities in favor of large-scale deportations.

WATCH — J.D. Vance: Mass deportations “should start with one million”:

The growing opposition to immigration reflects a gradual shift among Democrats from accepting immigration to rejecting it as President Joe Biden unleashes an unregulated wave of immigration into American communities that has swelled the country's population by roughly 10 million people who have arrived through legal, illegal and semi-legal routes.

Growing public opposition has bolstered the reelection campaign of President Donald Trump, who has pledged during his election to deport millions of illegal immigrants and stop more from coming into the country.

His rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, has not challenged the West Coast Democratic donors who have channeled an influx of immigrant workers, consumers and renters into American politics, communities, workplaces, schools and hospitals, transferring wealth to them.

The poll results are available to view on the interactive YouGov website, show To what extent do Americans agree or disagree with the statement that “immigration is a waste of national resources”?

Between June 2020 and December 2023, the percentage of Americans who agree with this statement rose from 30 percent to 43 percent.

The percentage of those opposed fell from 46 percent to 32 percent.

This represents a 26-point change nationwide by December 2023.

A quarter of Americans aren't concerned and say they are “neutral” on the issue.

But the decline in support for immigration has been much steeper among Biden's Democrats.

Immigration is a waste of national resources” dropped from 70% to 47%, a drop of 23 percentage points.

The percentage of Democrats who approved jumped from 13% to 31%, while the number who were neutral increased slightly from 17% to 22%.

The data shows that between June 2020 and December 2023, Democratic support changed by 40 percentage points.

Still, Democrats are under intense pressure from their leaders to accept immigration levels that would transform the nation.

“No country or society has ever tried to build a democracy as large and diverse as ours – a democracy that brings together people from every part of the world – over decades. The world is watching to see if we can actually do it,” former President Barack Obama said at the Democratic National Convention.

Among Republicans, there has been little change in attitudes since June 2020.

The proportion of pro-establishment “opposed” voters remained roughly stable at around 18.5%.

The “approval” percentage rose from 56 percent to 65 percent, with even moderates shifting to an “approval” view as they saw Biden's immigration surge into workplaces, communities, schools and hospitals.

Other YouGov polls have shown that a growing majority of Americans believe immigration makes the country “worse.”

Of 1,595 Americans surveyed, 38% said immigrants make the country worse. Poll conducted June 9-11Just 28% said immigration makes the country “better,” a question that revealed a huge 30-point shift in opposition to immigration since President Joe Biden opened the border.

An August YouGov poll also found that immigration was the most important issue for 15% of registered voters and 11% of independents. Immigration ranked second overall to “inflation/prices” at 23%. Immigration was the most important issue for 15% of men and 11% of women.
