US Open player that lost to Coco Gauff admits to napping in between matches

German tennis player Tatjana Maria lost 6-4, 6-0 to Coco Gauff in the second round of the U.S. Open women's singles on Wednesday.

Maria, a 37-year-old mother of two from Germany, admitted that she took a nap between matches at the U.S. Open on Friday because her match against Gauff started at 7 p.m.

“In the evening, I'm tired like everyone else and I have to take a nap,” she said. “I have to rest all afternoon to be ready for the evening.”

Maria wasn't the only player to doze off during a match in Flushing, Queens this week. Zhang Zhizhen, the 27-year-old who won the silver medal in the mixed doubles for China at the Paris Olympics, also admitted to dozing off before losing in the first round to England's Jack Draper on Tuesday.

“When I feel tired, I want to sleep, so I do. If the first game is at 11 a.m., I might not have enough time, but for other games, I might take a 10- or 15-minute nap,” he said. “In the afternoon, I might sleep an hour or two.”

U.S. Open champion Andre Agassi believes American tennis is ready for a Grand Slam “breakthrough” in men's singles.

Gauff, meanwhile, advances to the third round on Friday to face Ukraine's Elina Svitolina as she seeks to defend her U.S. Open singles title after sweeping the tournament last year at just 19 years old.

Gauff comes into Queens after a string of shocking losses but has been in good form so far in the tournament.

At Wimbledon in early July, Gauff lost in the round of 16 in women's singles to Emma Navarro and then lost in the doubles quarterfinals. At the Paris Olympics She competed in the third round of the women's singles, the second round of the women's doubles, and the mixed doubles quarterfinals.

At the Canadian Open on Aug. 9, Gauff, who was seeded No. 1, lost in the round of 16 to a lesser known opponent, 14th seed Diana Schnyder. Her most recent match at the Cincinnati Masters may have been Gauff's worst yet, losing in the round of 32 to Yulia Antonovna Putintseva of Kazakhstan.
