Ahead of a rally in Pennsylvania on Friday, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) unveiled billboards in the state alleging that former President Trump is threatening access to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
In a statement sent exclusively to The Hill, the DNC said Trump lied about his position on IVF and claimed he wants to ban it. The billboards were set up in Johnstown, where Trump will campaign later Friday.
“Donald Trump's Project 2025 Undermines Reproductive Health Care & Threatens IVF,” the sign reads.
“Trump overturned Roe and threatened the future of IVF,” read another sign.
“Trump can lie all he wants about his position on IVF, but his own 2024 platform effectively threatens to ban IVF and abortion across the country. Trump has overturned Roe v. Wade, opening the door to the flood of threats to IVF that we are currently witnessing. Fetal personhood bills are rampant in 19 states and growing,” said Adi Toev, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee.
Trump said Thursday that if elected, his administration would protect access to IVF and get the government or insurance companies to cover the costs of the treatment. IVF has become a central issue for voters since the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen fertilized eggs are considered people, and Trump has said he supports access to and protecting the treatment.
Democrats have tried to link Trump to Project 2025, a plan put together by the Heritage Foundation for a future Republican administration. Trump has sought to distance himself from Project 2025.
President Trump in July said Project 2025 goes “too far” on abortion. The plan calls for revoking the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the abortion drug mifepristone and proposes using the 19th century Comstock Act to prosecute people who send abortion pills and other abortion equipment by mail.
