Shots rang out next door to the Harlem mansion (worth approximately $3 million) shared by a ballet dancer and her banker husband.
Sunday's shooting happened at 1:40 p.m. on West 118th Street in South Harlem, an area that real estate agents have dubbed “SoHa” and which is shaping up to be the next big boom area, with prices for renovated homes soaring into the millions.
“I'm really worried about the safety of my family,” said the banker, who asked not to be named out of concern for his family's safety.
Police said a doorbell video camera captured the moment a gunman on a scooter fired four bullets, striking the victim in the buttocks and grazing the top of the head.
The video shows the shooter zooming in, stopping in front of an apartment next door to the home and pulling out a gun.
The victim ran but was struck by gunfire and was seen on video falling to the ground on his stomach in front of the couple's home.
The gunman then picked up the scooter and fled eastbound.
The 30-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, was known to hang out on the building's porch, where men frequently loiter and play card games, neighbors said.
Police said the victim, who did not live in the building, was taken to Harlem Hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
Police recovered four 0.9mm caliber shell casings at the scene.
Police sources said the victim was uncooperative.
A neighbour, who asked not to be named due to concerns for his safety, said he witnessed the victim selling drugs whilst the men played card games and had called police on multiple occasions.
“There are always people playing cards in front of the store, and if someone is hanging out on the block, someone will go meet them, and that person will go inside the store, pick up drugs and exchange them,” the resident said.
Police said no arrests had been made as of Friday.
The shooting comes after a recent increase in violence in the neighborhood.
On July 2, a man was shot in the back and killed in a drive-by shooting outside a senior center about two blocks away at the intersection of West 118th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.
The perpetrator then crashed the car and stole the city bike.
The shooting death toll in Harlem's 28th Precinct has risen to 12 so far this year, 33% higher than the nine for the same period in 2023.
Felony assault cases rose from 162 to 202, a 25% increase, according to NYPD data.
