Independents Prefer Trump over Harris for President by Double Digits

A poll released this week found that independents are by double digits more likely to prefer former President Donald Trump to lead the country than Vice President Kamala Harris. economist/YouGov was found.

This survey photograph After the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, the polling team asked respondents a very simple question: “Who would you rather have as president, Harris or Trump?”

Despite Harris leading Trump by two points nationally, Trump has a one-point lead on this question, with 47% saying they would rather have Trump as president than Harris, and 46% saying they would like Harris to be commander in chief.

But the results are even more striking among independents, who by a 12-point margin say they would rather see Trump as president than Harris.

Nearly half (49%) said they would prefer Trump to Harris as president, while just 37% said they preferred Harris, and 13% of independents said they would prefer them both equally.

This reality coincides with another surprising reality in the polls: Independents are backing Trump again.

Breitbart News elaborates:

As expected, Trump leads among Republicans and Harris leads among Democrats, but Trump has regained a solid lead among independents, with 42% backing him and 37% backing Harris, a difference of 5 percentage points.

This reflects a slow rise in Trump's support over the past few weeks. Harris initially led with independents, but three weeks ago they were both tied at 36%, before Trump took a one-point lead the following week. Last week, the two were tied at 38% with this group. In other words, after the DNC and Kennedy Jr.'s withdrawal, Trump's approval rating among independents has risen by four points in the last week alone.

Among independents, 2% also chose Stein and 1% chose West, with 2% saying they would not vote if given those options, down from 6% last week.

Additionally, the same survey asked respondents, “Regardless of who you support, who do you think would win the presidential election?” Trump still had a slight lead at 37% to Harris' 36%.

While 39% of independents said they didn't know, 38% believed Trump would win, followed by 23% who believed Harris would win.

The survey was conducted among 1,555 U.S. adults between August 25 and 27, 2024. Notably, the survey was conducted before Harris' interview with CNN, in which she categorically stated that she had not implemented any so-called plan to address inflation or falling prices during her three and a half years in office, and claimed that “we had to revive the economy” and that “we got it done.”

When asked if she thought “Bidenomics” had been a success, Harris gave a lengthy response.

When we work to lower prescription drug prices for Americans, including capping the annual cost of prescription drugs at $2,000 for seniors; when we work to extend the child tax credit in the first year of this Administration, reducing child poverty in America by more than 50 percent; when we work to invest in the American people and bring manufacturing back to America, creating more than 800,000 new manufacturing jobs and bringing businesses back to America; when we work to improve supply chains so that American families don't have to rely on foreign governments to provide their basic needs, I would say that's a good effort.

“There's still work to be done, but it's good work,” she said.
