Brooklyn's joyous West Indian Days Parade turned bloody on Monday with at least six people shot along the route, authorities said.
Police said shots were fired around 2:35 p.m. in the 300 block of Eastern Parkway, where a colorful celebration of Caribbean life was taking place.
One male victim was shot in the head, another in the torso, another in the arm, and yet another in the wrist.
One woman was shot in the shoulder and torso, and it was unclear where the fifth and sixth victims were shot, officials said.
At least one person is likely to die from their injuries.
About one million attendees, many dressed in green, red and yellow, descended on Crown Heights on Monday afternoon for the 57th annual celebration of Caribbean culture and traditions.
The lively and celebratory event saw participants of all ages wearing everything from boas and tiaras to hot pants and body paint marching along the parade route through Crown Heights.
“Panama is a big part of my identity, so this parade means a lot to me,” said Miss Panama Parade 2023 reigning beauty queen Katherine Paulino, 23, of Crown Heights.
“I think it's great that people from different cultures can come together and celebrate as one community.”
