Shooting at West Indian Day parade in NYC leaves 5 wounded, police searching for suspect

Five people were shot, two critically injured, when a man opened fire on a crowd during a West Indian American Day parade in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday.

“One person intentionally attacked a group of people and tried to ruin everyone's day, and we will not tolerate that,” NYPD Sergeant John Chell said at a press conference after the shooting.

He said four of the victims were men and one woman, two were in critical condition and three were expected to survive.

Chell said there were no shooters and the parade was continuing.

“We have loads of officers working really hard this weekend and today to keep this area and this parade safe. We've been here until the early hours of the morning doing just that – working hard and keeping this area safe.”

Police are continuing to search for the suspect, described as a black man in his 20s with a slim build who was wearing a black shirt with paint stains and a black bandana.

Chell added that police believe the shooting was “not random” but do not know the motive.

“I'm crying. It's so awful. How can someone have the nerve to fire a gun in front of so many people, babies, children, elderly people,” said witness Jalisa Bailey. New York Post.

“I know this parade has a history of violence, but it has been peaceful for the past few years and there is plenty of security, so I was hopeful that the violence would have ended by now,” she added.
