US federal prosecutors announced Tuesday that they had arrested Linda Sun on suspicion of acting “on behalf of the Government of the People's Republic of China.”

Sun worked for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and served as deputy attorney general under the current governor. She is charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering, violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act and alien smuggling. Sun's husband, Chris Foo, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and fraudulent use of identity documents.
The couple was arrested Tuesday morning at their $3.5 million Long Island home.
Prosecutors said Sun used his position to craft the New York messages to suit the Chinese government's objectives. Sun also allegedly engaged in other acts to advance Chinese policy, such as blocking Taiwanese government representatives from contacting New York state officials.
In return, the couple are alleged to have received millions of dollars and lavish gifts. Authorities also alleged that the Chinese government sent “Nanking-style salt duck” to the home of Sun's parents.
“This illegal scheme enriched the defendants' families by millions of dollars,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace.
Prosecutors said Sun was required by federal and state laws to register as an agent of a foreign government but did not do so.
Sun was fired in 2023, according to a statement from Haukle's office.
“This individual was employed by the Executive Division over 10 years ago. We terminated her employment in March 2023 after discovering evidence of misconduct, immediately reported her conduct to law enforcement, and have assisted law enforcement throughout this process,” the statement read.
Sun also served as chief diversity officer in the Cuomo administration.
Haukle was elevated to the governor's position in 2021 after Cuomo resigned amid a number of allegations and controversy. He has announced he will be elected governor in 2022 and seek reelection in 2026.
