The FBI learned of the suspect in the 2023 Apalachee High School shooting while investigating the source of the online threats.
FOX 10 Phoenix Reported “The FBI, in a joint statement with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, said Gray had been under law enforcement surveillance for more than a year before Wednesday's school shooting.”
and Atlanta Journal-Constitution attention“In May 2023, the FBI's National Threat Countermeasures Center received several anonymous tips regarding online threats to commit school shootings.”
Following the report, Colt Gray, who was 13 at the time, was interviewed by police and denied making any threats.
Gray's father was also questioned, and “he stated that there was a hunting gun in the home, but that the suspect never had access to it unsupervised.”
Gray was under surveillance after being questioned, but the FBI said there was “no reason for his arrest or further law enforcement action at the local, state or federal level.”
On September 4, 2024, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that 14-year-old Colt Gray had been arrested for the murders of two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School.
