Intellectual Cornel West slammed Democrats after they were forced to pass California's reparations bill.
State Democrats created a commission to look into the possibility of providing reparations to Black residents for past systemic racism, but when Republicans tried to force the bill to actually pass, they balked and shelved the motion.
“The politicians are too preoccupied with finding some status or standing in the Democratic colony!”
West, who is running for president, slammed California's Legislative Black Caucus and called for political courage to pass the controversial bill.
“What we're witnessing in California is the very essence of political cowardice.” said Cornel West said on social media, “The reparations bill that was supposed to be signed by the Governor is not only being held up primarily by the Legislative Black Caucus, but is being delayed and postponed by another committee, another investigation. This is the last thing we need. We need action!”
West also addressed allegations that the Legislative Black Caucus introduced the bill because they feared Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, would veto it.
“The Governor is too preoccupied with his Presidential ambitions and the politicians are too preoccupied with gaining some status or standing within the Democratic Party hierarchy!” he continued.
“Please! Enough is enough! Where is your moral consistency? Where is your political courage? That's what we want!” he added.
The fight over the reparations bill devolved into shouting matches as protesters rallied at the Capitol to demand Democrats move forward with the bill, a decision that prompted some to say they would withhold their support for California presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
“The governor needs to understand that the world is watching California and that this directly impacts your friend Kamala Harris who is running for president,” said a Black protester in California's state capital.
In 2022, the Reparations Task Force announced that Black descendants of enslaved people are owed $569 billion in housing reparations.
Philosophically, West claims to be a Marxist and a Christian.
