Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said she will support Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) over incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the Texas Senate election.
“But I want to say specifically, here in Texas, you have a great, serious candidate running for the United States Senate,” Cheney said, interrupted by raucous applause during an appearance at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Friday.
“Well, not Ted Cruz, but Colin Allred is someone I worked with in the House and when you think about the type of leader we need in our country, and in this regard, we need someone who may not agree with every policy position but who will serve with integrity,” she said.
“We need honorable public servants, and in this election, Colin Allred is that person. I will work for him.”
Allred, who is struggling to unseat Cruz for a third term, thanked Cheney on social media. say The former No. 3 chairman of the House Republican Conference is “a patriot who believes in the importance of protecting our democracy and will always put country before party.”
“I'm honored to have her support, and in the Senate we will work bipartisanally to get things done for Texas,” Allred said.
New Emerson College Poll/The Hill investigationIn the poll released Friday, Cruz had 48 percent approval, while Allred had 44 percent. About 8 percent said they were undecided. The same poll released in January had Cruz at 42 percent, while Allred had 40 percent.
A poll released in late August gave the Texas senator a slim lead, with 46.6% of Texas voters saying they intended to support Cruz, while about 44.5% said the same about Allred.
In an interview with the Texas Tribune Festival, Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Trump, also said that her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, would vote for Harris in the 2024 election.
The news of her father's endorsement of the Democratic candidate came just days after Cheney said she would also be voting for Harris, who said in a statement, “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and values the Constitution, I've thought deeply about this. Given the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not going to vote for Donald Trump, but I am going to vote for Kamala Harris.”
