Cotton on Cheney backing Harris: ‘Endorsements are not gonna make the difference in this race’

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, responded Sunday to former Vice President Cheney's endorsement of Vice President Harris.

“Dick Cheney is a Democrat and Kennedy is a Republican,” Cotton told host Dana Bash on CNN's “State of the Union.” “I think this shows that there's a lot of turmoil in American politics.”

“But at the end of the day, endorsements aren't going to make a difference in this election,” the Arkansas senator continued.

The former vice president said in a statement Friday that in America's history, “there has never been an individual more threatening to our country than Donald Trump.”

“He tried to steal the last election, using lies and violence to stay in power after voters rejected him. He cannot be trusted with power again,” Cheney continued.

“As citizens, we each have an obligation to put country above partisanship and uphold the Constitution,” he added. “That's why I will be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.”

In an interview with CNN, Cotton said the 2024 presidential election was “highly unusual.”

“This is the first time in over 100 years that a former president has run for office,” Cotton said.

The former vice president's daughter, former Congressman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), also announced that she would vote for Harris, a few days before her father.

“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and values the Constitution, I've thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only will I not be voting for Donald Trump, I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney said.
