On Friday, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California cannot ban concealed carry guns in hospitals.

The three judges reached a unanimous decision. said According to Reuters, the bans “can be enforced in bars, restaurants and parks that serve alcohol, and California can enforce the bans in casinos, libraries, zoos, stadiums and museums.” But the three justices also ruled against Hawaii's ban on concealed carry in banks “or adjacent parking lots” and California's bans on concealed carry in hospitals, churches and public transportation.

In hearing the case, the three judges Rahimi (2024), Blue En (2022), and Heller (2008). In doing so, they noted that “our nation has a clear historical tradition of prohibiting firearms in sensitive locations,” distinguishing between locations that have existed since the nation's founding and those that are relatively new.
In other words, places that have recently come to be considered sensitive have always existed. With this approach, the three-judge panel upheld the ban on some “sensitive places” but opposed enforcing the ban on others.
