Tyreek Hill said he was confused why police detained him after he was involved in a car accident Sunday morning a block away from Miami's Hard Rock Stadium.
Speaking about the incident for the first time after the Dolphins' win over the Jaguars, he described the situation as “crazy” and could not explain why officers had handcuffed him.
He told reporters he had “no idea” why this happened.
Hill was cited with reckless driving for allegedly speeding, and a passerby filmed part of the star wide receiver's interaction with police just outside the stadium.
“My mom didn't raise me that way, so I wasn't disrespectful,” Hill said of the incident. “I didn't swear. I didn't do anything like that. I'm still trying to figure out how it happened.”
Video of the incident showed Hill handcuffed face-down on the ground, while other footage showed the Dolphins wide receiver standing upright with his hands cuffed behind his back.
At one point, the officer appeared to move aggressively toward him.
After the game, Hill was asked by a reporter if the officers put their hands on him while he was handcuffed, to which he replied, “Yes.”
One of the officers involved in the incident serves in a management position, and the Miami-Dade Police Department said it was conducting an “immediate investigation” into Hill's detention.
“That should tell you all you need to know,” Hill said of the news that the officer had been placed on administrative duties as a result of the incident.
When Hill was stopped, several teammates stopped to try and help him, for which he expressed profuse gratitude.
“I was feeling really alone so it was really nice to have my teammates support me in that situation,” Hill said. “When they showed that, it just showed me we have a really good team this year. It was awesome to see them fighting for their lives.”
Hill's teammate, Calais Campbell, said he was also handcuffed at the scene.
