“So I want to look at Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania. And we have a tight race in Pennsylvania, OK? This is a close race between Harris and Trump in the great state of Pennsylvania,” Enten told host John Berman. “A poll from a month ago had the New York Times giving Harris four votes, Quinnipiac University giving her three votes, Franklin and Marshall University giving her three votes, and Harris giving her three votes.”
“But look at the polls that have come out over the last week or so, and what do you see? It's a lot closer. It's a tie in the CBS News YouGov poll. It's a tie in the CNN/SSRS poll,” he continued. “And to me, this is part of an emerging pattern in a very important situation. It looked like Harris had a slight lead, but within the margin of error, it looked like it was going to be a very, very, very close race at this point, evenly matched.”
Berman asked Enten “how important” a win in Pennsylvania would be in the presidential election.
“So if we look at this map, and this is the betting favorite, what do we see if Kamala Harris wins Pennsylvania here? In this particular case, we see that Kamala Harris wins,” Enten responded. “Look, there are exactly 270 electoral votes and Donald Trump has 268. So if Kamala Harris wins Pennsylvania, that's an Electoral College win.”
“But let's take Pennsylvania out of the Kamala Harris column and put it in the Donald Trump column. What happens if Trump is the betting favorite to win Pennsylvania and we flip Pennsylvania red? Well, look here,” he said. “Donald Trump wins the Electoral College. 287 electoral votes to Kamala Harris' 251. So that's why I say this is crucial… At the end of the day, it's so crucial. This state is very, very crucial.”
CNN reported in late August that Trump currently leads Harris by 32 points among white voters without a college degree in Pennsylvania. voteCNN political director David Chalian on Wednesday called the numbers “a sign of crisis for Harris.”
Trump is leading Harris nationally, 48% to 47%. According to Enten noted Friday that Trump would win the election “if he beat the current polls by just one point.”
