Resignation of Republican Attorney General May Impact the Entire State

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost Set to Resign

Reports indicate that Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is likely to resign on Thursday, which could lead to some upheaval in the state just ahead of the midterm elections.

Yost, who has spent 25 years in state government, is said to be stepping down to pursue a position in the private sector, according to the State House Press Office. Should Yost resign immediately, the attorney general’s seat would remain vacant for eight months until the next election.

This situation would require Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to appoint someone to fill the attorney general role. Although DeWine might consider nominating Keith Faber, the current state auditor, this would only create another vacancy to address.

Interestingly, a similar issue could arise because nearly all incumbent statewide Republicans, apart from Yost and DeWine, are either running for a different office or currently serving in one. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the situation.

Previously, Yost had aimed for the governor’s seat until receiving President Donald Trump’s endorsement for Vivek Ramaswamy, compelling Yost to withdraw from the race. Ramaswamy subsequently won the Republican primary for governor against Casey Pucci, a car designer and racing team owner.

Yost’s background reveals that after graduating from Ohio State University and obtaining a law degree from Capital University, he began his career in public service as a county auditor. He steadily advanced through state politics, eventually starting his first term as attorney general in 2019.

While there has been no official announcement regarding his resignation, both Yost and DeWine have not responded to inquiries for comment.
