California Gov. Gavin Newsom (Democrat) has pushed for gun control measures in response to Sunday's attack on Apalachee High School, but they won't stop school attacks.
Newsom posted on X:
Note that 75 percent of Governor Newsom's proposed gun control measures address the point of sale: 1) adding background checks to private sales, 2) raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21, and 3) imposing waiting periods on gun purchases. None of these gun restrictions would have had much of an impact on the Apalachee High School attacker; he was only 14 years old, already too young to purchase a gun.
Similar storefront gun restrictions were pushed after the Dec. 14, 2012, attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School, but in that attack the attackers stole guns, making storefront gun restrictions moot.
Governor Newsom's fourth gun restriction, a ban on “assault weapons,” also likely will not stop school shootings.
For example, the federal “assault weapons” ban (a ban that Democrats have consistently sought to renew) was in place from 1994 to 2004, so it would have been in effect at the time of the Columbine High School attack on April 20, 1999. Despite the ban, 13 innocent people were killed and more than 20 were injured.
