The Department of Justice announced that an immigrant who entered the United States illegally has pleaded guilty to stealing an American's identity to obtain a passport.
Angela Maria Francisco, a 42-year-old immigrant from Guatemala, allegedly falsely identified herself as a U.S. citizen in 2011 and used a false identity to obtain a U.S. passport.
“She subsequently allegedly used the passport to travel to her native Guatemala in 2012, 2015 and 2018. She also allegedly used the same identification to register to vote in Alabama in 2016, and to vote in the 2016 and 2020 primary and general elections,” it noted. Fox News.
“In 2021, Francisco allegedly applied for a passport renewal using the same false identity and used it to travel to and from Guatemala in 2022.”
Francisco was living in Russellville, Alabama at the time of her indictment. She now faces a nine-count indictment in federal court alleging “falsely claiming citizenship for voting, making a false statement on a U.S. passport application, using a U.S. passport obtained by false statement, and aggravated identity theft.”
A plea agreement was also offered in which Francisco pleaded guilty to all nine charges.
“I have always been clear that this office's number one priority is to ensure that only eligible Americans are able to vote in Alabama elections,” Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen said in a statement. “I want to thank the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama for their efforts in investigating and prosecuting this individual. We will continue to assist law enforcement in any way we can in prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law anyone who illegally voted in Alabama's elections.”
