Late last month, a mother in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was accused of fighting with students in a gym before school started.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Aug. 22 at IDEA Bridge. WAFB-TV reported.Students boarded the morning bus to campus and waited for classes to begin.
“When my child goes to school, I feel like her life is in the hands of the school, so to know that no one was there the whole time this was going on is very, very worrying.”
Jaenk Brown, a third-grader at the school, told the station he was defending himself from another student, the student's sister and the student's mother.
“She was threatening her and saying things like, 'Yeah, let's go outside and fight, come on, let's fight,'” Jaenque recalled to WAFB, adding that shortly after, “everything just started exploding and I got punched.”
Baton Rouge Police responded to the incident, but the investigation is not yet complete and charges are pending, the department said. Officer Saunders Watts confirmed to WAFB that the mother entered the school through a door near the gym and participated in the altercation.
Jaenque's mother, Yakisha Brown, told the TV station she was worried about her children's safety at school and was frustrated. “There are so many lives involved in this. I don't think it's fair, it's not right.”
WAFB reached out to IDEA Public Schools to ask what security measures are in place and if security or staff are held accountable in cases like this. The station said Public Information Director Rebecca Suarez responded: “IDEA Bridge is aware of an incident that occurred on campus. We received a report of a physical confrontation involving a parent. Appropriate staff were on scene and responded to the incident. On-duty staff and administrators were able to bring the situation under control.” [sic] “We have assessed the situation and removed the parents from campus. All students and staff are safe. The campus worked with local law enforcement on the investigation.”
Jaenque added to WAFB that no one in authority was there when the fight started: “Nobody was there. Not teachers, not janitors. We were in the gym at the time and they were supposed to be in the gym. They were supposed to be watching all of us. They were supposed to come in and they were supposed to be there before we got in there. We were there for like five minutes. I'm not gonna lie, students were trying to stop it, but there were no janitors or anything like that.”
The department added that the IDEA Public Schools website states that all campuses are closed and visitors can only enter through the front doors. WAFB also asked if the mother and students would face any punishment, but the department said it has not yet received a response.
Brown told the station she hopes to see drastic changes made to IDEA Bridge's security and safety measures: “When my child goes to school, I feel like her life is in the school's hands, so to know that no one was there the entire time this was going on is very, very concerning.”
