Republican candidate violently attacked while putting up campaign signs in Las Vegas in broad daylight: Report

A man running for state legislature in Nevada was violently attacked This happened about a week and a half ago, when I was putting up election posters in broad daylight.

At about 4 p.m. on August 29, Stanley Vaughn braved the Las Vegas heat and wandered around the intersection of Pecos Road and Twain Avenue, about five miles east of the Las Vegas Strip, holding up campaign posters for himself and other candidates.

Vaughn believes the suspect is homeless and reports the suspect was disheveled and possibly hadn't bathed in several days.

Vaughn then turned around to attach a sign to a chain link fence when a man suddenly approached her with a knife and demanded her wallet, she claims.

“I was so focused on getting the cable ties through the fence that I wasn't paying attention to the people and things passing by,” Vaughan recalls. South Korea“I had my back turned, I turned around. [and he] I was surprised.”

Vaughn, an Army veteran, martial arts enthusiast and security and police liaison for his homeowners association, said he “instinctively” kicked the would-be robber, at which point the suspect “ran away,” Vaughn said.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of it: the suspect was later found to have slashed him on the forearm with a knife.

“When I jumped in the car, I noticed I was bleeding,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn then drove home, where his wife, a nurse, treated his injuries. His forearm was still bandaged when he spoke to KVVU.

Vaughn believes the suspect is homeless, is disheveled and likely hasn't bathed in days, and told KVVU he won't be hanging up campaign posters alone again.

Police are treating the attack as an isolated incident.

Detectives also appear to have identified a suspect, although KVVU reported that “the perpetrator has no known ties to any crimes in the area.” As of now, his name has not been released.

Vaughn, 67, is running as a Republican for Nevada's 20th Congressional District seat. His opponent, incumbent state Rep. David Orentlicher (Democrat), condemned the attack.

“I am extremely concerned and saddened by the attack on Mr. Vaughn and I pray for his speedy recovery. We all deserve to feel safe in our communities, and I am committed to continuing my work to reduce crime across Nevada. I hope the perpetrator is held accountable for his actions,” Orentlicher said in a statement to KVVU.

Orentlicher, a Democrat, law professor at the University of Nevada Law School, physician, and self-described expert in “medical ethics,” received Planned Parenthood's Outstanding Legislative Service Award for her “strong and persistent support” of the organization's mission. Website say.
