Germany tightens border controls

German Interior Minister, Nancy FazerThe German chancellor announced on Monday that temporary controls would be extended to all of Germany's land borders in a bid to tackle illegal immigration and protect the country from extremist threats.

The interior ministry said it had notified Brussels of the order to set up border controls at land borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark for six months, the Associated Press reported.

The restrictions will come into effect on September 16 and are in addition to those already in place at Germany's land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.

Fazer said:

We are strengthening security at home through concrete actions and we remain tough on illegal immigration.

The Minister also stated:

Until a new Common European Asylum System achieves strong protection for the EU's external borders, we must further strengthen controls at our borders.

The move comes after a deadly knife attack in Soligen left three people dead last month and police in Munich engaged in a shootout with a gunman near the Israeli consulate last week.

It also comes amid growing political pressure on Germany's coalition government following the victory of the far-right Alternative for Germany in Thuringia state elections this month.
