5 suspects detained in connection with multiple burglaries in Washington, DC, police say

Washington, D.C. police said they detained five suspects early Tuesday morning following a series of reported thefts in the District.

The Metropolitan Police Department said businesses were robbed and property damaged in several areas, including City Center, Georgetown, the H Street Corridor, Logan Circle and near Columbia Heights.

“Overnight, a group of people decided to vandalize property and break into businesses throughout the city, particularly in the City Center and Georgetown neighborhoods, businesses in the H Street Corridor, businesses in Logan Circle and businesses north of Columbia Heights,” police said in a statement.

Police said police resources have been increased in areas where thefts and property damage have occurred.

Investigations are ongoing into six cases of robbery and six cases of damage to property.

Five suspects were arrested on multiple charges including theft and fleeing police.

“MPD detectives continue to investigate these crimes and will hold those responsible accountable,” police said.

A veteran DC police officer was killed in the line of duty Wednesday night.

Police plan to increase vigil across the city following last night's incident.

Police said violence and vandalism will not be tolerated.
