Disgraced music mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has been ordered to pay $100 million to a Michigan inmate following a sexual assault conviction.
A Michigan inmate won a $100 million judgment against Combs for sexual assault, Report From Metro Times.
Lenawee County Circuit Judge Anna Marie Anzalone imposed the sentence on Derrick Lee Cardello Smith on Monday after Combs failed to appear in virtual court. Notably, a default judgment is issued in a civil lawsuit when a defendant fails to formally respond to a legally filed proceeding.
Judge Anzalone will reportedly begin making the payments on October 1st, in monthly installments of $10 million.
The music mogul, who has been embroiled in multiple lawsuits and criminal investigations over the past year, reportedly drugged and sexually assaulted Cardello Smith at a party in Detroit in 1997.
According to the Metro Times, Cardello-Smith has a history of challenging the justice system in litigation, is a “self-taught student of civil and criminal law,” and is serving time in prison on an unrelated conviction.
The inmate told the outlet that he and Combs had known each other for a “long time,” meeting while working in restaurants and the hospitality industry in Detroit.
Notably, Monday's default came after Cardello Smith was granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Combs in early August, according to court documents obtained by the outlet.
The TRO was reportedly issued to prevent Combs from selling assets that could be used to compensate Cardello Smith.
Cardello Smith reportedly submitted prison visitation records to the court, revealing that Combs' name appeared on the visitation records and claiming that the music mogul offered him $2.3 million in return for dropping the lawsuit.
During an August court hearing, the inmate recalled a conversation with Combs in which he claimed the Bad Boy Records founder said, “You know how we feel” in response to Cardello Smith's refusal to settle out of court.
Caldello Smith told Judge Anzalone that he responded to Combs by saying, “I don't agree with the way you got off.”
The Metro Times noted that Caldello Smith's sentence handed down on Monday could be the largest ever appeal of a sentence against an inmate without a lawyer.
“This man is a convicted felon and sexual predator with 14 convictions for sexual assault and kidnapping over the last 26 years,” Combs' attorney, Mark Anifilo, told the outlet.
“Mr. Combs has never even heard of his name, let alone been notified of the lawsuit, yet his record includes defrauding the courts from prison,” Anifilo added. “Mr. Combs expects this case to be dismissed swiftly.”
Meanwhile, Combs recently put the Beverly Hills mansion that was raided by Homeland Security earlier this year on the market for $61.5 million. Report By Mansion Global.
