Former cop wins GOP primary in Delaware to face candidate who would be first transgender person in Congress

Retired state trooper James Whalen won the Republican primary and is now preparing to face off against transgender Democrat Sarah McBride for a seat in the Delaware House of Representatives.

Whalen has an uphill climb to overcome if he wants to become the first Republican to hold state-level office in Delaware since 2010.

The Republican winner will likely face off against McBride, who was virtually unbeatable in the primary and the only candidate to raise money.

McBride argues the legislative effort is an example of “far-right” extremism.

“In 2020, I became the first openly transgender person elected to a State Senator in the nation. I felt like America was paving the way for the future. But since then, the Far Right has attempted to scapegoat the LGBTQ community for their failed policies,” McBride wrote on Twitter. “As they intensify their attacks on families and children, it has become even clearer that for our democracy to function, it must be inclusive of all of us. If elected, I will be the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress.”
