Former President Donald Trump mocked Vice President Kamala Harris during Tuesday night's debate, taking advantage of her infamous “I'm talking” remark after she tried to interrupt him.
During the debate, Trump briefly walked the audience through how Harris has continually shifted her positions on key issues for political expediency, starting with fracking.
“She's been against it for 12 years. Defunding the police. She [for] “Harris has abandoned that forever. She abandoned all of that so wrongly, so badly, and everybody's laughing at it. OK? Everybody's laughing at it. She abandoned at least 12, maybe 14 or 15 different policies. For example, she was big on cutting the police budget in Minnesota. She's out,” Trump said, as Harris shook her head and muttered something, causing Trump to address her.
“Wait a second. I'm talking now. Don't mind. Does that sound familiar?” Trump asked, to which Harris, with her mouth open, muttered another phrase to Trump.
In other words, Trump seized on the “I'm talking” moment between Harris and former Vice President Mike Pence during the 2020 vice presidential debate and used it to his advantage. When Pence interrupted during the debate, she condescendingly said, “I'm talking,” with a smile across her face.
Some have suggested that Harris' team opposed muting her microphone for precisely this reason, hoping to give her another powerful “I'm speaking” female moment. It appears that it was Trump who seized the moment.
