Debate Moderator ‘Lied’ about Babies Who Survive Abortions, Pro-Lifers Say

Pro-life activists say Tuesday's presidential debate moderators mischecked the facts about post-abortion deaths and say many states still don't protect infants who survive the horrific procedure. The controversial moment came shortly after Republican candidate Donald Trump criticized former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam for not supporting mandatory medical care for infants who survive abortions. Northam is a pediatric neurologist.

“He said a baby is going to be born and we're going to decide what to do with the baby. In other words, we're going to execute the baby,” Trump said.

Trump then turned his focus to Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, saying he “is totally OK with abortion in the nine months of pregnancy.” [and] He also says that executions after birth are…okay.”

ABC News host Lindsey Davis fact-checked Trump's comments, saying there is “no state in this country where it is legal to kill a newborn baby.”

But pro-life leaders say Davis is wrong.

“The debate moderators and Kamala lied about babies being born alive after botched abortions,” Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action, said on Twitter. “In many states, these babies are not protected.”

“According to the Minnesota Department of Health, eight babies have survived attempted abortions in Minnesota since 2019, when Governor Walz took office,” Rose said. “In five cases, no life-sustaining measures were administered and in three cases, only palliative care was provided. Horrifyingly, all of these children have died.”

2024 Family Research Council Report At least 277 babies nationwide have been found to have survived abortions since 2006, but the actual number is likely much higher because there is no federal abortion reporting requirement and only nine states have mandates.

In 2019, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who was then a senator from California, Voted for the block The bill required doctors and nurses to “preserve the life and health” of babies who survived abortions and to “immediately transport and admit such children to a hospital. The bill was known as the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”

“Currently, the murder of an infant after birth, if reported, constitutes the crime of infanticide. However, abortion physicians and other health care providers who fail to provide care to an infant born alive after an abortion and who subsequently die do not face federal criminal prosecution,” the Federal Crime Commission report states. “The Abortion Survivors Protection Act seeks to change this by requiring abortion physicians and other health care providers to report failures to provide life-saving care to infants born alive after an abortion and by imposing penalties for such failures.”

“The host (like much of the media) continues to cover up the Democratic Party's extremism on abortion,” said Daniel Darling, president of the RAND Cultural Exchange Center.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said the presenter's comments were factually incorrect.

“Kamala Harris voted twice against protecting the survival of babies who survive abortions,” Perkins said. said“Tim Walz once voted against live birth in the Legislature and once voted for it, but then repealed the law as governor.”

Pro-life activist Elisa Martinez agreed.

“The host lied about infanticide on national television. Infanticide occurs when a baby is born alive and allowed to die during an abortion!,” Martinez said. “Radical Democrats like Kamala have consistently voted against medical care for these babies with the Infant Survival Protection Act.”
