Black voters in key battleground states highly motivated to vote in November: poll

With Vice President Harris leading the Democratic field, a new poll finds that black voters in key battleground states are highly motivated to vote in this year's election.

The poll, provided exclusively to The Hill by Everytown for Gun Safety, Rolling Sea Action Fund PAC and Global Strategy Group, found that majority of black voters in Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, Las Vegas and Philadelphia identify as Democrats, and 74 percent are “very motivated” to vote in November.

More than half of respondents said they were more eager to vote since President Biden gave up on reelection and because of the prospect of a Black president and a Black House speaker if Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives.

“It's clear that Black voters are ready to send a message to Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans that they are not fit to run our country,” said Nikala Campbell Wallace, executive director of the Rolling Sea Action Fund.

“But these results also show that there is much work to be done in the final stages and that we cannot let our guard down,” she added. “We must keep organizing and mobilizing to ensure Vice President Harris wins so we can continue to make progress protecting our communities from gun violence, lowering the cost of living, and protecting the health care that women are entitled to.”

Eighty-one percent of black voters surveyed had a favorable view of Harris, and 79% praised her for the job she was doing as vice president.

The poll also gives Harris a 71-point lead over former President Trump.

Eighty-four percent of those surveyed had an unfavorable view of Trump, and 63% had an unfavorable view of Trump's running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

Overall, Republicans in those states were deeply unpopular among the black voters questioned by pollsters.

Focusing on Congress, 85% said they want the House of Representatives to be controlled by Democrats next year.

The poll also revealed Black voters' top concerns heading into November, including the cost of living, inflation and protecting access to abortion.

They are also very concerned about gun violence and almost universally support “common sense” gun safety policies.

“Polls show that overwhelming majorities of Black voters in key states strongly support Vice President Harris and want a leader who will push for stronger gun control laws,” said Angela Ferrell Zavala, executive director of Moms Demand Action.

“It's clear that these voters want to reject Donald Trump and his anti-gun policies that have disproportionately harmed Black communities. The data proves that gun safety is a major political issue. It's energizing voters, changing minds and serving as a test of sorts for candidates in key states.”

Global Strategy Group conducted the survey of 1,000 registered black voters in Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, Las Vegas and Philadelphia from Aug. 27 to Sept. 5. The results have a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
