Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign released a new political ad on Wednesday: a video of her debate with Donald Trump.
“Our latest ad is here,” the campaign boasted on social media.
“She starts off saying she's going to do this, she's going to do that, she's going to do all these great things. Why doesn't she follow through on them?”
Harris campaign official Discussion video posted They say “latest ad” because they believe Harris not only won the debate, but also outshone and discredited her opponent, and they believe drawing as much attention as possible to the debate would help Harris.
But the video posted by his campaign curiously omits about three minutes of Trump's closing remarks.
Instead of including Trump's closing statement on the video, even though he was allowed to give his closing statement second, the video cuts it entirely and ends with Harris' closing argument. It's unclear why the Harris campaign cut Trump's remarks, but an examination of Trump's words offers some clues as to why.
Even conservative commentators believe Trump's overall performance in the debate was not the best, but his final remarks were widely praised.
That's because Trump has asked an important question — perhaps one that will determine the outcome of the election — and Republicans believe it should be at the center of his campaign message.
“She started out saying she's going to do this, she's going to do that, she's going to do all these great things. Why doesn't she follow through on them?” Trump said.
“She's been president for three and a half years. Three and a half years to fix the border. Three and a half years to create jobs. Three and a half years to do all the things that we've talked about. Why isn't she doing it?,” the former president continued. “She should step down right now and go to that beautiful White House, go to the Capitol and get everybody together and do what she wants to do. But you haven't done it. And you won't, because you believe things that the American people don't believe.”
Trump not only emphasized that question, but returned to it again after criticizing Harris for her secretive policy changes.
“You can't sacrifice your country for poor eyesight. But I have one simple question: why didn't she do it?” he reiterated.
Moderator David Muir asked Harris a similar question at the start of the debate: “When it comes to the economy, do you think Americans are better off than they were four years ago?” but Harris completely dodged the question.
President Trump and Republicans will likely continue to emphasize these two questions in the 53 days remaining before the election. Once the American people start answering those questions, Democrats are not going to like their conclusions.
