James Morris, son of disgraced Gateway Church founder Robert Morris, has announced the name of his new church in Southlake, Texas, as “Passage Church.”
“We are so happy to announce that the Lord has given us a name for the church He has placed in our hearts to plant! Thank you all for praying with us and for us! We have been praying to the Lord for the past few weeks and feel like God has confirmed the name through multiple scriptures and people. The name is Passage Church!” the couple said in the post. According to Christian PostThe new church's name comes more than a month after James Morris resigned in late July as leader of Gateway Church after serving for several weeks. His father resigned June 18 following allegations of child sexual abuse made by Cindy Creminsher, now 54. Alleged He began abusing her in the 1980s, when she was 12 years old.
In announcing the new church, Morris and his wife said the church has a “double meaning.”
“Firstly, 'Passage' is another name for the Bible. We believe in the authority and power of scripture, the Bible. Passage Church will be based on the Word of God and will be a place where people can be taught the Word of God,” they said.
“Secondly, 'passage' means to travel from one place to another. Passage Church is on the move and is filled with people pursuing God in all seasons. Every person's life is full of transitions and journeys. We will be a place to help people wherever they are in their journey and lead them into a relationship with Jesus and God. Jesus said, John 10:9“'I am the door.' Another name for a door is a passageway,” the couple's announcement continued.
They explained that they plan to hold a meeting in early October, but have not yet decided on a venue, and asked volunteers to pray for them so they can help them find a place to hold the meeting, as well as a place to worship.
“If you are interested in volunteering or being part of the launch team, please apply at the interest meeting or contact us by email. Another way you can start supporting us right now is by praying. We ask as many people as possible to pray for Passage Church!” the announcement added.
“What we need most right now is a place to gather. We're not stressing about this because we know God will provide, but please join us in prayer because this is a very real need.”
